Gosaikunda Pass Trek

Overview

(A Sacred Himalayan Journey through Lakes, Passes, and Tamang Culture)

The 7-day Gosaikunda Pass Trek is a spiritually enriching and scenically stunning adventure into the heart of the Langtang region. This moderate trek offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, high mountain passes, and sacred alpine lakes, while introducing trekkers to the rich Tamang and Tibetan-influenced cultures of the Himalayan foothills. Starting from Dhunche, the trail climbs through lush forests, tranquil villages, and eventually into the high alpine zone, where the revered Gosaikunda Lake lies cradled beneath snow-capped peaks.

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche (1,960m), a charming hill town that marks the entry point to Langtang National Park. The drive offers views of terraced hills, roaring rivers, and remote villages. On the second day, the trek starts from Dhunche and ascends through oak and rhododendron forests to reach Chandanbari (Sing Gompa), situated at 3,250 meters. Along the way, trekkers may visit the local yak cheese factory and monasteries, gaining insights into the local spiritual practices.

On the third day, the trek continues uphill to Lauribina (3,910m), offering panoramic views of the Ganesh Himal and Langtang ranges. The changing vegetation and altitude make this section more alpine and open, giving a hint of what lies ahead. Prayer flags flutter along the ridges, and you may begin to feel the spiritual aura of the sacred lakes drawing near.

The fourth day is a highlight, as you reach the legendary Gosaikunda Lake (4,380m), a pilgrimage site sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The area is dotted with glacial lakes, including Saraswati Kunda and Bhairav Kunda. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva created Gosaikunda by piercing a glacier with his trident. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and mystic silence, the place feels deeply spiritual and serene. Pilgrims and trekkers alike offer prayers by the turquoise waters, especially during the Janai Purnima festival.

On day five, the trail leads across the dramatic Lauribina La Pass (4,610m)—the highest point of the trek. The climb is steady and rewarding, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges. After crossing the pass, the trail descends into the Helambu region, reaching the settlement of Ghopte (3,440m). The change in landscape is striking, shifting from high alpine to forested valleys.

The sixth day takes you further down to Kutumsang (2,470m), a traditional Tamang village surrounded by rolling hills, meadows, and terraced farmlands. The day’s trek is gentler, with time to rest and interact with local families who share stories of their mountain heritage and daily life in the remote hills.

The final day of the trek leads you down to Chisapani and then onward to Sundarijal, from where you’ll drive back to Kathmandu. This last section offers a pleasant walk through Shivapuri National Park, with views of Kathmandu Valley slowly emerging as you descend.
