Upper Mustang Trek

Overview

Journey into the Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal

Explore the mystical land of Upper Mustang — a region once known as the Last Kingdom of Nepal. Opened to foreign travelers only in 1992, Upper Mustang remains one of the most culturally preserved and geographically dramatic destinations in the Himalayas. This 10-day trek offers an unforgettable journey through an ancient Tibetan Buddhist kingdom hidden beyond the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Highlights

  • Discover Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the former Mustang Kingdom
  • Walk through barren desert landscapes, colorful cliffs, and deep canyons resembling the Tibetan Plateau
  • Immerse yourself in Tibetan Buddhist culture, with centuries-old monasteries, chortens, and cave dwellings
  • Witness local life untouched by modernity in traditional villages like Kagbeni, Samar, and Ghami
  • Experience a historical and spiritual trek, ideal for those seeking more than just natural beauty

Trek Overview

This trek is a unique blend of cultural exploration and adventurous hiking, offering access to a region that once served as a key trade route between Nepal and Tibet. The restricted area status of Upper Mustang has helped preserve its ancient heritage, language, and religion. With minimal rainfall due to its location in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, the trail is ideal for trekking even during the monsoon season.

Best Time to Go

  • Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best seasons.
  • Monsoon (June to August) is also possible due to Mustang’s dry climate.
